Taking place in 1866, in an original story by Michael Palin, a staid Oxford University don, hoping to be named the next president of his college, takes a rare holiday in the Swiss Alps looking for some peace and quiet before the appointment. Unfortunately, he tumbles and falls after guiding two American women he has met through a trail. As he recovers, the two become infatuated with the confirmed and reticent bachelor, who is slightly confused by their attentions.
After returning home he finds he must fight a younger professor, with a reputation as a ladies man, for the presidency of the college; when the two women "drop by" to visit him on their way back to the United States. It is at this juncture that he realizes he must face the dilemma of choosing between them.
