"So now," Cumming concludes with a laugh, "I’m an action hero, according to Sylvester Stallone."
One of Cumming’s first scenes in the film called for him to be playing on a golf course, something that simultaneously presented a challenge and allowed him to exhibit his sense of humor. "Everyone told me, ‘Oh, well, you’re Scottish, you must be able to play golf!’" recalls Cumming. "That’s like saying you’re French, so you must eat horses and suck snails live from their shells. I had to rely on Sly to give me some putting instruction, which did the trick."
Rachael Leigh Cook was equally appreciative of her co-star Stallone. "Sly’s hilarious," says Cook. "It would be easy to have a preconceived notion of him as a big tough guy but he’s not that at all. He speaks four languages and likes to watercolor. And he’s funny."
It’s obvious that the two actors share a genuine affection for each other. Cook describes shooting a scene which required her to be asleep on a hotel room bed when Carter comes in and starts watching a video. "So somehow Sly got it into his head that it would be really funny to dump me off the bed," she says. "So, he picked up one side of the mattress — I was still diligently trying to sleep at this point -- and practically threw me on the ground." Director Kay promptly decided to print the improvised take.
