Plot: America has entered World War II. Husbands and sons fight in far-off lands. But along the Gulf Coast the war is much, much closer. Hitler's U-boats prowl coastal waters. In the Louisiana village of Cut Off, Camille Picou struggles to raise her two children. Already considered an outcast for long-ago crimes she did not commit, her troubles are worsened by the handsome Coast Guard ensign determined to ferret out saboteurs, the meddlesome rogue of a village priest, and the mysterious refugee Doctor Lenz, hiding from his past, whose secrets will change her life. Another tanker is torpedoed. Drums of fuel come up missing. Rumors fly that someone is helping the enemy.
