IN THE MIRROR OF MAYA DEREN is an insightful documentary that celebrates the life of avant-garde filmmaker Maya Deren, a passionate, strong-willed individual who continues to inspire and influence women, artists, and filmmakers all over the world. A former dancer and poet who found her true calling when she picked up a movie camera, Deren proceeded to make a series of groundbreaking avant-garde films that are extolled to this day. Director Martina Kudlacek presents clips from Deren's most famous works--including AT LAND, RITUAL IN A TRANSFIGURED TIME, MESHES OF THE AFTERNOON, and THE VERY EYE OF NIGHT--as well as unreleased footage from her countless trips to Haiti (which inspired Deren's book DIVINE HORSEMEN: VOODOO GODS OF HAITI), to show her truly distinct vision. Interviews with important figures, such as filmmakers Stan Brakhage and Jonas Mekas and dance pioneer Katherine Dunham, provide even greater insight into Deren's life and work. Featuring a memorable score by experimental composer John Zorn, IN THE MIRROR OF MAYA DEREN is a must-see for aspiring artists and enthusiasts.
