Plot: A coming-of-age tale set during the Great Depression.

Billy lives with his mother, father, two sisters and grandparents on a meager farm in Oklahoma. He saves up some money and purchases a pair of raccoon-hungry hounds. When one dog dies in a skirmish with a wild animal, the other withers away in mourning.

Billy's family, though, sees the deaths as a sign from God to sell their homestead and open a new chapter in their lives. Before they leave, they plant a red fern on the canines' burial ground to honor their memories.

According to Indian mythology, this will forever solidify their love for their lost friends.
