The Ninth Gate Reviews |
Depp tries, the idea behind it is good; but it just flops and gets too sloppy for its own good. Polanski has done much better and this is only recommended to those who want to see Depp chainsmoke and to see how an interesting idea can fail even in the hands of a good director. Much of the story is unbelievable and Depp is terribly miscast as a book expert. He doesn't look like a nerd, despite the fake glasses he's forced to wear. But the film delivers plenty of atmosphere and Langella is fantastic as the obsessed rich guy hoping to unlock the gates of hell. [read review] -- (eSplatter.com)
I wish I could give this film higher than a six, but it just wasn't as good as I wanted it to be. Polanski should just stick with films involving satans baby. Rent this movie if your a fan of Johnny Depp, but don't rent it if you want to get scared. [read review] 6/10 --FrighT MasteR (UHM)
Like many of Polanski's films, it is slow, deliberate, and strange. Unlike Polanski's other work, it suceeds in creating an utterly immersive atmosphere. [read review] 81/100 --Jack Witzig (ColdSpot)
