In telling the true story of scientist Jeffrey Wigand (inspired by Brenner's "The Man Who Knew Too Much" Vanity Fair article), Mann has taken many liberties with the actual characters and events in order to craft a tighter, more gripping motion picture. Understanding this, THE INSIDER remains, nonetheless, an insightful glimpse into the corruption of big business politics, as well as a revealing portrait of two men who are at a moral crossroads in their lives. As the tortured Wigand, Crowe delivers a supremely convincing performance that is at once unsettling, empathetic, and exhilarating. Pacino is unflinching as producer Lowell Bergman, a man who must finally confront the disgusting politics of his business when his promise to Wigand appears to have been broken. Mann's traditional style is once again employed, using close-ups and handheld camera work to create a claustrophobic, paranoid tension that builds from the very beginning and maintains itself impressively throughout the film's 155 minutes. The fact that this excessive length doesn't crudely introduce itself to the viewer is one of the many compliments that Mann's film justly deserves. Russell Crowe put on around 40 pounds to portray Jeffrey Wigand. Once shooting for THE INSIDER wrapped, he then had to lose the weight for his role in GLADIATOR.
