Plot: A dress tailcoat alters the lives of a variety of New Yorkers -- some for the better, some for the worse -- in this entertaining, episodic drama. The jacket first falls into the possession of Orman, a matinee idol desperately in love with a married woman. When this ill-fated love triangle results in the star being shot, the garment changes hands numerous times. Among those who temporarily possess it are Charles Smith, a down-on-his-luck pianist, and Browne, a failed lawyer who has become a bum. The coat comes in extremely handy for both men -- for Charles when he gets a golden opportunity to conduct an orchestra at Carnegie Hall, and for Browne when he receives an invitation to his college's 25th reunion. Eventually, the jacket ends up with a thief who tries to escape with it aboard an airplane.
