Plot: THE STORY OF DR. WASSELL is a dazzling Technicolor journey to China, Java, and Australia that combines romance and adventure in a classic WWII treatment of heroic bravery and gallant patriotism. Gary Cooper stars as real-life hero Dr. Corydon N. Wassell, who single-handedly transported 12 wounded soldiers from Java to Australia during World War II. He was awarded the Navy Cross and was hailed by President Franklin Roosevelt. Dr. Wassell, a medical researcher in China, signs on to the vast war effort and finds himself on the island of Java, looking after wounded soldiers as they wait to be evacuated. When the Japanese attack, they learn that only the walking wounded will be allowed on the naval rescue ships, forcing Wassell to decide between his own freedom and the lives of his patients. Left alone on the remote island, the men rally and fight for freedom while wooing native girls and reminiscing about their hometowns in this classic Hollywood war effort. DeMille shot in three-strip Technicolor with great effect, creating a richly vibrant and exotic locale. The film is based on the true story and the corresponding novel by James Hilton and features an original introduction from the legendary director, which recounts the day he heard President Roosevelt's radio address to Dr.
