In his over 50-year career, RIP TORN (Jim Brody) has been honored repeatedly for his work in film, television and on the stage.
Torn's uproarious portrayal as Artie, the acerbic talk show producer on Garry Shandling's "The Larry Sanders Show," won him an Emmy in 1996 for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, two Cable Ace Awards, the American Comedy Award and six consecutive Emmy nominations.
Torn's return to Broadway in Horton Foote's "The Young Man From Atlanta" earned rave reviews. His most recent feature film credits include starring opposite Al Pacino and Russell Crowe in "The Insider," and with Michael Douglas in "The Wonder Boys." He also appeared in "Men In Black," Trial and Error" and in the animated feature "Hercules," as the voice of Zeus. At the same time, his starring roles in such critically lauded independent films as "Where the River Runs North" have continued his stellar works in such indie cult classics as "Pay Day," an Oscar nominated performance in "Cross Creek," and "Heartland." Torn's role in the Albert Brooks comedy led to being cast in "The Larry Sanders Show."
Torn's reputation as an actor's actor was earned on stage as well as on screen, dating from his portrayal of Brick in the Broadway adaptation of Tennessee Williams' " Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," to his recent triumph in Eugene O'Neill's "Anna Christie." Through his own stage company, he recently directed his daughter Angelica and son John in John Paul Alexander's "Strangers in the Land of Canaan" at the Actors Studio.
He has continued as a presence on the New York stage as an actor (numerous Obie Awards with special note as a leading interpreter of Tennessee Williams and Eugene O'Neill), director and company director, while maintaining one of the busiest performing schedules in theatrical films and television fare.
Torn directed such stage productions as "Richard III," "Walter" and "Look Away," starring Geraldine Page and the poet Maya Angelou. He directed and performed in "Two By Chekov," and the "Village Wooing." Torn produced "The Button" and "Spider Rabbit," and directed, co-produced and performed in "The Bearding of the President."
Torn's many other film credits include "Pork Chop Hill," "Sweet Bird of Youth" (reprising his role from the Broadway run), "King of Kings," "The Cincinnati Kid" and "Tropic of Cancer." He consulted on the Oscar-winning docu-feature "Harlan County U.S.A."
