 Synopses for Treasure Planet (2002)
1.

This kid-friendly disc serves as an advance for the DVD release of Disney's Treasure Planet feature, while emphasizing the story's roots in the written word. The main attraction is the movie's story, which can be read aloud in five different languages while viewers watch successive, still images from the original animated film. Sound strange? Sure, but the process is engrossing for children--a natural audience for storytelling. Also on board is a multilingual vocabulary experience, in which you can hear words associated with Treasure Planet's story (e.g., "chest") in Spanish, Italian, French, etc. Two songs from the film, written and performed by Goo Goo Dolls icon John Rzeznik, also get the image-by-image treatment, though the disc also includes a powerful, ghostly celestial music video for Rzeznik's "I'm Still Here (Jim's Theme)." There's also a game compatible with Playstation 2 (and other gaming consoles with DVD drive). --Tom Keogh

2.In this adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's TREASURE ISLAND, Disney presents a fantastic space adventure. Jim Hawkins (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a teenage boy with a taste for adventure who seems to always be in trouble, much to the chagrin of his hardworking mother (Laurie Metcalf). But when he comes into possession of a high-tech map leading to Treasure Planet where an ancient cache of jewels and gold lies buried, it's like a dream come true. His mother's friend Doctor Doppler (David Hyde Pierce) arranges for a ship, and the two set sail, traversing the universe on course for the treasure. Captain Amelia (Emma Thompson), a domineering feline, is in charge of a rough-and-tumble crew of odd creatures, who may have their own designs on the treasure. Jim is placed under the supervision of John Silver (Brian Murray), the cook, who is both his father figure and his adversary. Slowly but surely the ship makes its way toward its destination, as Jim comes of age, learning to follow his heart, do what's right, and be a leader.

With stunning computer animation that combines both space and sea elements, TREASURE PLANET called upon the skills of 350 artists, animators, and technicians. The result is dazzling, colorful, and fast-moving, with some very realistic-looking creatures including variations on spiders, robots, and whales.

3.Fifteen-year-old Jim Hawkins, a fatherless boy growing up on the planet Montressor, is searching for his place in the universe. A bit of a loner, he escapes his daily routine of helping his Mom run the Benbow Inn by soaring through the air on his homemade solarsurfer. His life takes a sudden and dramatic turn when a space cruiser crashlands near the Inn. A crazed turtle-like alien named Billy Bones emerges from the wreckage with wild talk and a warning about a fiendish cutthroat cyborg that is following him. Just as Bones expires, a band of pirates land and begin ransacking the Inn as they search frantically for the chest Bones had in his possession. The Benbow Inn is destroyed in the process.

With the help of a family friend, astrophysicist Dr. Delbert Doppler, Jim and his mother narrowly escape to Doppler’s home. There they discover the chest contains a gold metallic sphere with odd engraved markings. Jim fiddles with the object and a 3D holographic image of the planets and stars fills the room. An avid reader of pirate tales since his childhood, Jim immediately identifies the luminescent two-ringed green planet as Treasure Planet, the legendary hiding place of Captain Flint’s treasure trove: the loot of a thousand worlds.

Determined to help his mother rebuild the Inn with the treasure, Jim answers the call to adventure. Doppler agrees to finance the expedition with his savings and the plan is swiftly set into motion. Shortly afterwards, Jim and Doppler arrive at the bustling crescent moon-shaped spaceport of Crescentia. Here they get their first glimpse of the impressive space galleon, the RLS Legacy, and meet the beautiful cat-like alien officer Captain Amelia. Along with her first officer, Mr. Arrow, the Captain runs a tight ship but must contend with a motley crew of assorted aliens hired by Doppler.

4.A secret map inspires a thrilling treasure hunt across the universe as young Jim Hawkins and a hilarious cosmic crew headed by the daring Captain Amelia set off in search of their destiny. Aboard a glittering solar galleon, Jim meets the ship's cyborg cook, John Silver, who teaches him the value of friendship and the power of dreams. Jim soon teams up with his crazy new robot pal, B.E.N., and the shape-shifting Morph to discover a treasure greater than he ever imagined.
