Somerset Maugham's story "Miss Thompson" was first adapted into a play, "Rain," and has received at least three other screen adaptations: the silent film SADIE THOMPSON (1928, directed by Raoul Walsh and starring Gloria Swanson, Lionel Barrymore, Raoul Walsh, Blanche Frederici, Charles Lane, and James Marcus); RAIN (1932, directed by Lewis Milestone and starring Joan Crawford, Walter Huston, William Gargan, Guy Kibbee, Walter Catlett, and Beulah Bondi); and the all-black DIRTY GERTIE FROM HARLEM (1946).
