Plot: Ethel Waters stars in this award-winning Broadway play adapted for the screen. Georgia, 1945. Frankie Addams, an angst-ridden, pre-pubescent tomboy, spends hours daydreaming. The motherless youngster fantasizes about being a member of her brother's wedding but is saddened when she learns she won't be going along on the honeymoon. Mr. Addams, Frankie's father, is oblivious to the physical and emotional changes his daughter's going through. So when she's troubled, Frankie turns to Berenice, the family's black cook, with whom she finds solace, companionship and joy.
