Plot: This silent film, directed by Josef von Sternberg, provides an insight into the inner workings of Hollywood during the early years.
Russian General Dolgorucki flees to America after he is deposed during the Revolution. He ends up in Hollywood, where he becomes an extra waiting for his big break. That chance comes when Leo, a director who was Dolgorucki's adversary during the war, recognizes him from a photo. Ironically, Leo, who's making a film about the revolution, casts Dolgorucki as the general -- essentially playing the same "role" that he once played in real life.
