Kevin Rodney Sullivan in Barbershop 2: Back in Business (2004)
KEVIN RODNEY SULLIVAN (Director) made his feature directing debut, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, in the summer of 1998 to critical acclaim and box office success. It swept the NAACP Image Awards for that year, including being named Outstanding Motion Picture.
Sullivan, a native of San Francisco, began his career as a child actor appearing on stage and in films. He subsequently took a permanent position with the city's prestigious American Conservatory Theatre, training and performing in many stage productions, including the role of Puck in "A Midsummer's Night Dream." At 20, Sullivan moved to Los Angeles where he was cast in the films More American Graffiti, Night Shift, and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. He ultimately landed a regular role on Happy Days playing one of the "second generation" teenagers for the final four seasons of the series.
While working as an actor, Sullivan (who was also writing screenplays on spec), sold his first script - an episode of Fame - at the age of 22. He subsequently received feature writing assignments and additional episodic work (Cagney & Lacey, Knots Landing). An offer from ABC TV to create his own primetime drama soon followed. Knightwatch, which Sullivan executive produced, wrote, and directed, debuted in the fall of 1988 - directly opposite The Bill Cosby Show. Ironically, at the time, Sullivan was writing a feature for Bill Cosby to produce.
Sullivan's success with Knightwatch catapulted him into the ranks of the top show runners in television and raised his profile in the feature community. George Lucas enlisted him to write the screenplay of Red Tails, an epic story about the Tuskegee Airmen. Later he worked with Norman Jewison on an adaptation of the acclaimed play The Good Times Are Killing Me.
More recently, Sullivan directed and produced pilots with Danny Glover, Kate Bosworth, and Danny Nucci. Other directing efforts include HBO's Soul of the Game with Delroy Lindo and Conviction, a Showtime original feature starring Omar Epps and Dana Delaney.
