High school seniors and best friends Patti, Emma, Angela and Nikki think they know each other well. That is, until Nikki commits suicide. Her death prompts them to question their own lives and their friendship, and to examine their role politically as working-class women in a patriarchal society. When they learn from reading her journal that Nikki was raped, the young women take justice into their own hands.
