Plot: This Mexican-made film, set in Florida during the Spanish conquest, looks at the gradual transformation of one conquistadore after he's captured by Indian tribes. After his ship runs aground on the Florida coast, Cabeza de Vaca ends up a captive of local Indians. Although he tries to escape at first, he ultimately accepts his fate and begins learning both the tribe's language and its magical traditions, imparted to him by a shaman. Granted his freedom after he succeeds in curing a blind man, Cabeza de Vaca once again finds himself taken by another group of Indians; they treat him kindly and, ultimately, even becomes their shaman. But when Cabeza de Vaca encounters his fellow Spaniards once again, he finds they regard his newfound role as heretical... and have plans for the Native Americans that will surely end in their destruction.
