Plot: Reminiscent of Paul Mazursky's earlier musing on freewheeling coupledom, BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE, and a precursor to AN UNMARRIED WOMAN, his later study on separation, BLUME IN LOVE fits squarely in the middle of the director's vision of divorce, romance, and life in Los Angeles in the 1970s. Beverly Hills divorce lawyer Stephen Blume (George Segal) has fallen deeply in love with his ex-wife, Nina (Susan Anspach), but she has moved on and become involved with Elmo (singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson), a groovy out-of-work musician. Although Stephen has a new sex partner, divorcée Arlene (Marsha Mason), he feels incomplete without Nina. Despite attempts to cover up his feelings, Stephen finds it difficult to control himself, invading Nina's privacy, attempting to befriend Elmo, and behaving desperately to win back the love of his life. Returning to Venice six years after his honeymoon there, Stephen ponders the events leading to the destruction of his marriage. Mazursky cleverly cuts from Blume's romantic musings in Venice to the events in Los Angeles that brought him to this place, creating a skillful examination of modern couples in flux and highlighting his keen eye for satire and humor.
