Tagline: Nobody's as good as Bette when she's bad!

Plot: A poor man's MADAME BOVARY, the film stars Bette Davis as Rosa Moline, the intensely bored and dissatisfied wife of a small-town doctor (Joseph Cotten). Seeking to cure her ennui, she begins an affair with wealthy industrialist Neil Latimer (David Brian), who is vacationing at a cabin near her home. When Latimer returns to Chicago, Rose presses her husband's patients to pay their bills, using the money to finance a trip to visit the businessman. Latimer does his best to elude the persistent Rosa before admitting that their fling was merely a distraction, informing her of his engagement to a socialite. Shortly after the disappointed Rosa arrives home, she learns that she's pregnant, a condition that Dr. Moline hopes will bolster their shaky marriage. When the Molines attend a party given by friend Moose (Minor Watson), Latimer's caretaker, the industrialist also happens to be present. Having canceled his engagement, he asks Rosa to return to Chicago with him, unaware of her pregnancy. When he hears of this, Moose threatens to reveal her condition to Latimer if she leaves her husband. King Vidor's drama is somewhat less than the sum of its parts, but the film is notable for being Bette Davis's last film for Warner Bros.
