Synopses for The Barkleys of Broadway (1949)
1.
Fred and Ginger say hello to Broadway - and goodby to their glorious teaming. After 10 years apart, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers re-team in their final film pairing, cleverly written by Betty Comden and Adolph Green and smoothly directed by Charles Walters. The story, per many sources, mirrors real-life creative tensions the two shared. Astaire plays driven hoofer Josh Barkley. Rogers is his wife, Dinah, who longs to forsake the clackety-clap-tapping of Bouncin' the Blues for stage drama. She parts, Josh vies to win her back, and the routines leading to a happy resolution include Fred's Shoes with Wings On and a rhapsodic reprise of a George and Ira Gershwin number from Shall We Dance: They Can't Take That Away from Me. All of which proves they can't take away the Astaire/Rogers magic either.

Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, whose last joint project had been made 10 years before, come together one final time for this film. The magical pair play performers Josh and Dinah Barkley, whose act -- and marriage -- break up when Dinah decides to become a "serious actress". Among the unforgettable numbers are: "They Can't Take that Away from Me" (which Astaire and Rogers first performed in 1937's "Shall We Dance"), "Shoes With Wings On", "Swing Trot" and "You'd Be So Hard to Replace".
