Plot: IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is John Carpenter's foray into the world of H.P. Lovecraft and surreal horror. An insurance investigator (Sam Neill) is sent to find a missing author, Sutter Cane (Jurgen Prochnow). As he comes closer to finding the author, things start to change around him, and soon nothing is what it seems. Madness seems to be the normal state of things, while reason and sanity have no place in this new world created by the mind of Sutter Cane. Carpenter plays with changing perspective, making the audience aware thay they too are part of the story, and maybe, just maybe, this is not just make believe. In the Mouth of Madness is far more intelligent, complex, and flat-out horrifying than any of the "trendy" neo-slasher films that were being pumped out of Dimension Films with startling regularity at the close of the 1990s.--Cortney Fusco (Diabolical-Dominion.com)
Some interesting ideas and Carpenter's steady direction can't help the overly confused script from going downhill as it staggers along. Disappointing. -- (TheVideoGraveYard.com)
It's pretty cool. Great atmosphere, Charlton Heston (!) in a small role as Cane's publisher and great performances from Neill and Prochnow make this one of Carpenter's only decent films from the 1990s.-- (eSplatter.com)

Anyone who watches horror movies and claims to be a fan has to see this movie, it gets better ever time you see it. In the Mouth of Madness is in my opinion the best horror flick ever made, its perfection. --Mr Disgusting (Bloody-Disgusting.com)
