Fionnula Flanagan in Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002)
FIONNULA FLANAGAN (Teensy) has a distinguished international career that includes stage, film and television. She most recently received rave reviews for her performance as Mrs. Mills, the housekeeper, in Miramax’s thriller The Others, with Nicole Kidman, and audiences will remember her with Ian Bannen in the comedy feature Waking Ned Devine. She starred with Helen Mirren in Terry George’s critically acclaimed Some Mother’s Son, and with John Cusack in Ramon Menendez’s Money For Nothing.
Other films include Michael Winterbottom’s With Or Without You, Youngblood, with Rob Lowe, John Huston’s Sinful Davey, and the Academy Award-winning In the Region of Ice. She is widely known for James Joyce’s Women, in which she plays six women from the life and works of Joyce. She also wrote, adapted and produced the piece for the stage and subsequently as a feature film, and was awarded the Los Angeles and the San Francisco Critics’ Awards for her performance.
Her theatre work includes The Taming of the Shrew and Playboy of the Western World with Bristol’s Old Vic Company; Twelfth Night at London’s Royal Court; The Countess Cathleen at Dublin’s Abbey; and Happy Days and A Streetcar Named Desire at Dublin’s Gate. On the New York stage she starred in Ibsen’s Ghosts at The Roundabout and on Broadway as Molly Bloom in Ulysses in Nightgown with Zero Mostel, for which she earned a Tony Award nomination.
From among her television appearances, she won an Emmy for her role in the ABC miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man, and received an Emmy nomination as Best Actress for the series How the West Was Won.
Born in Dublin and educated there and in Switzerland, Flanagan trained at Ireland’s distinguished Abbey Theatre. She is married to the Los Angeles-based psychiatrist and addiction medicine specialist, Garrett O’Connor.
