This lavishly-filmed drama, based on real events, chronicles the tragic love affair between a married Austrian aristocrat and his mistress.
Archduke Rudolf is heir to the Hapsburg Empire but finds himself torn between preserving his family's rule and pushing for progressive reform in the country. When he falls for Maria Vetsera, a beautiful commoner, he angers his father, Emperor Franz-Josef. The emperor tries to break up the young couple's relationship, but his son is so in love with Maria that he will not be swayed.
It soon becomes clear that Rudolf and Maria's relationship is doomed...
