"L.627" is the name of the French penal code article for drug trafficking. The film's opening in France met with a lot of controversy, with people arguing both for and against the director's depiction of the police force. Interior Minister Paul Quiles was quoted as saying "We didn't wait for this movie to start taking the drug trade seriously." But police officers in Paris have said that the director accurately portrayed their run-down working conditions and outdated equipment.

One of Tavernier's motivations for making "L.627" was his own son's drug problems. Nils Tavernier, who is now clean, plays the role of Vincent, a young, novice cop, in this film.

Tavernier is known as a left-wing intellectual, but this film attacks France's socialist government. In addition, all the drug dealers in the film are either Arab or Black African immigrants, a loaded depiction given the recent growth in the number of right-wing French groups who denounce and blame "foreigners" for France's troubles.
