When authorities rule publisher Joe Green's death a suicide, his best friend, Inspector Alan Cross, smells a rat. So he sets out to uncover the truth about this suspicious-looking death. While investigating Green's relationships, he comes across Nazi sympathizers, incestuous siblings, sexually aggressive women and, as he speculated, a murderer.
