Joan Allen in Contender, The (2000)

JOAN ALLEN (Lame Hanson) is one of today's busiest and most respected actresses. A two-time Academy Award nominee, Allen gained her first nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Oliver Stone's "Nixon." Her portrayal of Pat Nixon also brought her awards from a number of critics organizations, including the Los Angeles Film Critics and the National Society of Film Critics. The next year, she earned another Best Supporting Actress Oscar' nod for her role in "The Crucible," for which she also garnered a Golden Globe nomination and won a Broadcast Film Critics Award.

Allen has more recently been honored by critics for her work in "Pleasantville" and "The Ice Storm," and also starred with John Travolta and Nicolas Cage in the hit thriller "Face/Off." Her additional film credits include "It's the Rage," "Mad Love," "Ethan Frome," "Josh and 5A.M.," "Searching for Bobby Fischer," "In Country," "Tucker: The Man and His Dream," "Manhunter," "Peggy Sue Got Married" and "Compromising Positions."

Also an accomplished stage actress, Allen won a Best Actress Tony Award for her work on Broadway in Lanford Wilson's "Burn This," and was Tony-nominated for her performance in "The Heidi Chronicles." Off-Broadway, she received an Obie Award for "The Marriage of Bette & Boo." In addition, she won the Clarence Derwent, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Theatre World Awards for "And a Nightingale Sang" in the role she originated with Chicago's renowned Steppenwolf Theatre Company, and for which she had won a Joseph Jefferson Award. An original member of Steppenwolf, Allen also received a Joseph Jefferson Award for her work in "A Lesson From Aloes."

Allen will next be seen in the television miniseries "The Mists of Avalon," with Anjelica Huston.
