Plot: André Téchiné deconstructs this story of a botched car theft and turns it into a somber, intricate, multifaceted story of a family torn apart by crime and a young thief's effect on those who love her. THEIVES commences with the death of crime boss Ivan (Laurence Cote) as seen through the eyes of his young and angry son, Justin. Through a series of flashbacks and narrative shifts, Ivan's brother, Alex (Daniel Auteuil), is introduced. Alex's job as a policeman has ostracized him from his family of criminals, and has entangled him in a bizarre and insidious love triangle with petty thief Juliette and her obsessed lover, Marie (Catherine Deneuve). As Alex investigates his brother's death, Téchiné leads the viewer through his passionless affair with Juliette, his own obsession with Marie, and his brother's world of teenage thugs and suburban crime. Filmed in the breathtaking Alps region of France, the film unravels as each character becomes interconnected and implicated in the crime. Alex's failed love and obsession for Juliette merges with his need to vindicate himself to his family as he simultaneous attempts to connect with his young nephew and forge a romantic liaison with equally troubled Marie.
