Plot: In 1890 London, the dynamic duo of Sherlock Holmes (Nicol Williamson) and Dr. Watson (Robert Duvall) is in danger of demise. The famous detective is living in a paranoid world of cocaine addiction, secluding himself from the outside world. In an attempt to cure his desperate friend, the faithful Dr. Watson leads him on a fabricated criminal case that ends at the doorstep of a Viennese doctor, Sigmund Freud (Alan Arkin). Although Dr. Freud is a laughingstock in proper Viennese society because of his radical theories, he is well known for his ability to cure addiction. As Dr. Freud attempts to unravel the mystery of Holmes's subconscious, the men become involved in a myster of their own: a heinous crime involving one of Freud's former patients. The fraulein Lola Devereux (Vanessa Redgrave) is a beautiful and famous mezzo-soprano--and former cocaine addict. When she is found badly injured and in a drug-addled state, Freud and his companions set out to get to the bottom of the crime, leading them to a mysterious kidnapping and a harrowing chase through Europe as the master intellects of Freud, Holmes, and Watson unite to fight injustice.
