James Caviezel in Count of Monte Cristo, The (2002)

Caviezel grew up in rural Mt. Vernon, Washington where his childhood dream was to be a professional basketball player. Instead, a sports injury and a talent for mimicry decreed a move into acting and he secured a cameo role in "My Own Private Idaho" after he faked being an Italian immigrant during the audition. In 1993 he was accepted into the Juilliard School for the Performing Arts but opted for Hollywood and a small part in "Wyatt Earp." Living in Los Angeles, Caviezel worked as a waiter and did the studio rounds, hoping for his big break. After six months, he was ready to pack his bags when Michael Ritchie offered him a small part in "Diggstown." But it was the legendary director Terrence Malick who truly launched his career when he plucked him from relative obscurity to star in the World War II epic, "The Thin Red Line." Since that compelling portrayal of a man living between heaven and hell, Caviezel has starred in a number of features including Ang Lee’s "Ride With The Devil," "Frequency" with Dennis Quaid, Mimi Leder’s "Pay It Forward" and starred opposite Jennifer Lopez in "Angel Eyes." Later this year, he will appear in "High Crimes" for director Carl Franklin.
