Tagline: In the world of magic, the hand is quicker than the eye and love is the wild card.
Plot: An introspective magician's assistant (Bridget Fonda) realizes her true powers while adrift on a fanciful journey through rural Mexico, pursued by a gritty P.I. (Russell Crowe) hired by her eccentric millionaire fiance. A curious blend of outlandish magical realism and the standard "gumshoe" nostalgia, based on the novel MISS SHUMWAY WAVES A WAND by James Hadley Chase.

It starts out well, a nice blend of intrigue, comedy, and maybe a little magic, but about halfway through, one of the actors lays an egg, and so does the film. I'm sure it's all intended in good fun, but the last hour of Rough Magic is far too scattershot for me, at least, to get a hold on. --Jack Witzig (ColdSpot)
