Plot: In RED DUST, sparks fly between Hollywood legends Jean Harlow and Clark Gable as bombshell Harlow perfected her saucy, passionate, comic persona while manly man Gable solidified his position as Tinseltown’s most desirable romantic lead. Gable’s Dennis Carson manages a rubber plantation in Indochina. When Harlow’s golden-hearted prostitute, Vantine, arrives on the scene, Carson attempts to pay her for her honest affections. The offended Vantine departs as Carson’s new engineer, Gary Willis (Gene Raymond), arrives with his ladylike wife, Barbara (Mary Astor). Willis catches malaria, and Carson and Barbara nurse him and an illicit affair to health. Vantine returns to the plantation and can’t get over Carson’s preference for the colorless, feminine Mrs. Willis. Carson attempts to tell Willis about the affair but fails when he realizes the depth of Willis’s love for Barbara. Vantine convinces Carson that Barbara can’t handle the tropics, forcing Carson to finally recognize which girl is his Ms. Right, and leaving Carson in a bind as to how to return Barbara’s affections to her husband. Beyond the wonderful performances and superb sets, RED DUST offers a reexamination of Victorian women’s stereotypes whose reverberations continue to be felt.
