Years before the fast-food chain hired a talking chihuahua as its official spokeshound, Taco Bell got some high-profile product placement in this dopey thriller set in the year 2032, when the sprawling megacity of "San Angeles" has banned violence and profanity, and where virtually all the restaurants are Taco Bells. (So much for democracy!) Sylvester Stallone plays an ex-cop who's been thawed out after 36 years of imprisonment for manslaughter, and Wesley Snipes plays his nemesis who also emerges from deep-freeze and proceeds to wreak havoc. It's not nearly as funny as the similarly plotted Austin Powers,; but this special-effects-laden comedy-thriller does have a few highlights, including the pre-stardom Sandra Bullock as the cop-trainee who teaches Stallone proper behavior (and sexual etiquette) in the future's conservative society. Co-starring is Rob Schneider as a frantic sidekick who matches Stallone's one-liners with idiotic wit. --Jeff Shannon

In the 1990s, urban terrorist Simon Phoenix is imprisoned in ice for the protection of society. His arch-nemesis, police officer John Spartan, also suffers the same fate after Phoenix frames him for the deaths of a busload of innocent bystanders.
In 2032, in the renamed city of San Angeles, Phoenix is accidentally freed and begins a new crime spree on a now violence-free populace. Spartan is released to capture the one-man wrecking crew; in the process, he discovers the corruption beneath San Angeles' pristine surface. Through non-stop jokes and action, Spartan shows the docile, futuristic police force that the old ways are sometimes the best ways.

In 2032 archcriminal Simon Phoenix (Snipes) awakens from a 35-year deep freeze in CryoPrison to find a serene, nonviolent Los Angeles ready for the taking. Unable to deal with Phoenix's brutal 1990's style, officials seek an old-fashioned cop to fight old-fashioned crime. They revive Sgt. John Spartan (Stallone), unjustly serving a CryoPrison sentence because of his last encounter with Pheonix.
