Joely Richardson shines in Maybe Baby, about a thirtysomething British couple struggling to have a child. After dabbling in fertility rituals and having sex according to a rigorous ovulation schedule, Lucy (Richardson) and Sam (Hugh Laurie) find their relationship tested by temptation; Lucy starts to yearn for a hunky young actor that her talent agency is representing, and Sam starts writing a seriocomic screenplay about their infertility--which he doesn't tell Lucy about, because she's already forbidden him to write it. Everything is fine until Sam delves into her diary in order to get a better grip on a woman's consciousness and learns more than he bargained for. Maybe Baby is a sincere and lighthearted movie, sprinkled with comic turns from Emma Thompson, Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean), Joanna Lumley (Absolutely Fabulous), and others. Laurie is solid, but it's Richardson's charm and intelligence that makes it work. --Bret Fetzer

Sam (Hugh Laurie) and Lucy (Joey Richardson) seem like the perfect couple - young, sexy, successful, happily married, and very much in love. They decide the time has come to add a baby to the family. Fine. And so they happily commence a carefully planned and energetic schedule of bonking and shagging. Yet nothing happens. They try everything - new age ritual, aroma-therapeutic massages, sex on lay lines under the full moon, Chinese acupuncture and erotic aphrodisiacs.
They try In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and have their respective sexual equipment thoroughly inspected by the finest Eastern and Western specialists. There appears to be absolutely no medical reason why they do not conceive, and yet the blessed event seems ever elusive. At the same time, Sam, who is television executive and writer, comes down with a serious case of writers block, whilst Lucy is getting increasingly frustrated and impatient.
One day Sam has an idea, an exciting and thrilling idea - an idea which holds the prospect of his becoming the artist he has always dreamed of becoming. He will write a romantic comedy about a loving and yet infertile couple. When Sam enthusiastically shares his idea with Lucy, she is horrified. Yes, all right, she does want to support Sam's creative impulses, but she can't allow him to parade their private medical predicament in public.
She absolutely forbids Sam from pursuing the idea, but he can't help himself. For the first time in years, the ideas are tumbling out of him. So begins a journey of love and betrayal, which will test their marriage and their love, in hilarious and unexpected ways. Sam will be sucked into the glamorous and superficial world of movie making. Lucy finds her loyalties and emotions tested as she gravitates towards the arms of another man.
When it comes to having children, everyone has a position.
Sam (Hugh Laurie) and Lucy Bell (Joely Richardson) are a married couple who seem to have it all: good looks, successful careers, matching motorbikes, and an enthusiastic love life. The only thing they lack is the one thing they want most - a baby. They try everything everywhere in their efforts to reproduce. Spontaneity is soon replaced by ovulation charts, and when the couple seeks medical help they soon find themselves bound to sperm tests and stirrups. Sam looks to break out of the doldrums by writing a successful screenplay, and his inspiration for the piece is a comedy about a couple trying to have a baby. Horrified by the idea, Lucy forbids him to tell their story. The prospect for creative fulfillment is too tempting for Sam to resist, and he goes ahead with the project. Meanwhile, Lucy is distracted by the attentions of a handsome client. Sam and Lucy's love for each other will now truly be put to the ultimate test with surprising results!
