Plot: Leslie Caron has one of her most memorable roles as the charming gamine who comes to understand the meaning of love. When orphaned Lili arrives in the city hoping for a job with her deceased father's friend, she discovers that the man has long since gone away. With nowhere to go and nowhere to stay, she takes temporary refuge with a traveling circus. But soon it becomes clear there's no place for her there, either, so Lili sadly plans to leave. But then, as she passes by the carnival's puppet show, the dolls begin to speak to her. She responds to them as if they were human -- not realizing that a crowd has gathered, and that her sweetness and sincerity have won everyone's heart. She joins the act permanently, and every night she and the dolls have a new conversation. The only problem is the bitter, crippled puppeteer, who never says a kind word to Lili. But he truly is hopelessly in love with his new assistant, and too afraid to reveal his feelings. Will Lili realize that the puppeteer and the dolls she treasures so much are one and the same -- before it's too late?
