Born the son of a socialist father and a Jewish mother in 1920s Stockholm, 12-year-old Roland Schutt must struggle for self-identity in a time of violent political repression and anti-Semitism. Because of Roland's parentage, the schoolteacher despises and physically abuses him, the neighbors manipulate him and the police bully him into a confessing to robbery. Although faced with such brutal social isolation, Roland still learns that happiness may exist even in an alienating world filled with prejudice.
