John Cusack displays his usual charm in this adventure film from early in his career. Prep-school student Dan Bartlett (Cusack) flunks his chemistry final and has to forgo a Caribbean vacation with his wealthy girlfriend Laurie and her family. When the professor decides to be lenient and lets him pass, Dan sets off after Laurie--but finds himself one step behind her as he's sidetracked, shanghaied, and almost shipwrecked. Meanwhile, the boat that Laurie is on gets hijacked, just as Dan finally catches up. Hot Pursuit won't be remembered as one of Cusack's best films, but it's enjoyable and has beautiful shots of the Caribbean. Robert Loggia gives a rambunctious performance as an old sea dog and Ben Stiller makes his film debut as a sleazy cabin boy. --Bret Fetzer

He's after the girl he loves. Everyone else is after him.
What would you do to share a sun-splashed week in the Caribbean with someone special? Battle a pirate?… A Hurricane?… A hijacking goon squad? Prep-schooler Dan Bartlett (John Cusack) does all that and more when he takes off in Hot Pursuit of his island-bound girlfriend. Although he's better prepared for the S.A.T. than jungle warfare, Dan summons up some everyman moxie, saves the day (and his neck) and takes you along every riotous step of the way! Also featuring Ben Stiller in his movie debut.

The one film in John Cusack's filmography he'd probably like us all to forget, this 80s-style preppy-in-peril film (compare and contrast with After Hours and Something Wild) casts him as a college student who gets mixed up with pirates and drug runners around the Caribbean. The wannabe screwball comedy falls flatter with each gag but Cusack's hang-dog sweetness and knack with one-liners carries it through and at the very least it's worth catching if only for a glimpse of Ben Stiller in his pre-There's Something About Mary fame days, in a double act here with his real-life father Jerry Stiller. --Leslie Felperin
