Who but Pedro Almodóvar would make a movie in which a nightclub singer named Yolanda, whose boyfriend has died from a heroin overdose, hides from the police in a nunnery--only to discover that the nuns have more perverse lifestyles than her own? The nuns of Dark Habits use drugs, write lurid pulp novels, design high-fashion habits, and keep a tiger in their courtyard. Yolanda (Cristina Sanchez Pascual) gets caught up in the head nun's scheme to regain the patronage of a wealthy noblewoman, but betrayal, illicit love, and a campy musical number are waiting in the wings. Dark Habits features Almodóvar regulars Carmen Maura and Marisa Paredes, as well as a bit part by Cecelia Roth of All About My Mother. Fans of Almodóvar's magnificent later films (like Habla Con Ella (Talk to Her)) may find Dark Habits a bit thin, but it offers its own charms and comic delights. --Bret Fetzer

This incredibly bizarre film by Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar follows Yolanda (Cristina Sánchez Pascual), a heroin-dealing nightclub singer who hides out in a convent after a deal goes badly and she becomes wanted by the law and rival gangs. The mother superior of the convent (Julieta Serrano) is a fan of Yolanda's singing and a lesbian heroin user, so before long she and Yolanda start shooting together. Another of the nuns (Marisa Paredes) takes LSD and hallucinates encounters with Jesus, while yet another (Chus Lampreave) writes trashy romance novels under a pseudonymn. There's also a pet tiger in the garden, and a dope-smoking priest. When the convent's main benefactor dies and his rich widow cuts off their contributions, the nuns pool together to try to raise money to support their habits. Facing the closing of the convent and the arrival of the stoic, dour head mother, the crazed girls throw a final party at which Yolanda sings a provocative song to her heartbroken mother superior. This gleefully blasphemous farce would make an interesting double bill with Whoopi Goldberg's SISTER ACT, which came out years later. Cecilia Roth (star of ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER) has a small role as one of the superior's former lovers.

"Hilarious, irreverent fun..." - V.A. Musetto, New York Post
Academy Award winner Pedro Almodovar's irreverent and biting comedy focuses on Yolanda (Cristina S. Pascual), a nightclub singer and junkie. When her boyfriend accidentally dies from a drug overdose, she decides it is better to hide out than face the cops who are looking for her. She winds up at a convent that specializes in saving women from the street. However, this is not your average group of nuns... the off-beat sisters include a heroin using abbess who is in love with Yolanda, a soft-core romance novelist and another who is raising tigers in the convent yard. When the nuns face the possibility of their convent closing, they throw a final and extravagant party starring Yolanda to try to persuade their wealthy patron not to abandon them.
